ELA: This week's letters were V and W. We read a book called Thanksgiving is for Giving Thanks and learned more about Thanksgiving. We also had a chance to write about what they are thankful for. Math: We made a turkey using block shapes to stamp shapes into turkey's feathers. It didn't turn out to be what we expected. However, it is okay since we tried our best. Social Studies: We finished our class family tree using different pictures. It was a great chance to learn about how our class families are different and similar. Science: We continued to learn about what are the things that living things need to survive. After the lesson, the students draw things that plants, animals and people need to survive in a scratch paper. They were fascinated by the scratch paper! Week Thirteen ELA: This week's letters were T and U. We also read a book called Pete the Cat Magic Sunglasses to learn about how Pete managed his emotion when he was unhappy. Math: We made a class octagon collaboratively using a clay and toothpicks. We learned that a octagon has eight corners and sides. Their octagon looks better than mine! Social Studies: We finished making our family puzzles. By making a family puzzle, we had a chance to learn about how each family member is special and different. As a group, we made a family tree which represents some of the differences and similarities among us. Science: We made a turtle's life cycle poster with clay, and we also read a book about how baby animals stay safe. We will continue to learn about how baby animals survive! Week TwelveELA: This week's letters were R and S. We also read a book called When Sophie gets really really angry and talked about how she managed when she got upset. Then, we worked on Ways I can Calm Down mini books which is also connected to our Social Studies SEL unit. Math:We learned that a hexagon has six corners and sides. The students also made a hexagon frisbee with popsicle sticks and a tape. We also learned how to write number 12. Social Studies: We shared our family photos with classmates and talked about what made each of their family special. We are also working on our family puzzle. Science: We learned about the life cycle of tree and turtle. The students made a class poster about the life cycle. Week Eleven ELA: This week's letters were P and Q. During our reading time, we read several books about Halloween. The students also had a chance to write about their pumpkin carving experience with Mr. Hill. Math: We learned the names of shapes. We cut some shapes out of paper and made a monster with only shapes. Social Studies: We read a book called The family book and talked about how each family is unique. Science: We observed our flower pots with the magnifying glasses. Then, we recorded our observation in our plant journals. Week Ten (Term2)ELA: This week's letters were N and O. We also read several books -Tiny Seed, Grow, Grow Flower, and How to Plant a Seed. These stories are tied to our science unit. Math: We started our first class on shapes. The students had a time to show me how much they already know about shapes. Also, we learned a new shape song. After that we used only shapes to draw animals on our white boards. Social Studies: We talked about our family. It was interesting to ask them how their family members help each other. Science: This term we are learning about plants and animals. To begin our science unit, we made our own flowerpot and planted our class flower seeds. They also started the plant journal to record their observation. Week Nine(End of Term one)This week, we finished our term 1 projects and lessons! They have done amazing job this term. I am very proud of them! We also picked sweet potatoes from our CDS sweet potato patch and the students were able to put their hands into the soil and see how sweet potatoes grow! We also had our first assembly. It was productive time to see what we've done in term 1. Week EightELA: We read "I Like Me" book and talked about what we liked about ourselves. We also wrote thank you card to the firefighters who visited our school last week. Math: They practiced writing numbers this week. We played "Who picks the biggest number" game. They closed their eyes and picked one card. Then, they wrote their numbers on the white boards and at the end they need to find the biggest number. We also reviewed our counting strategy by counting our fish scales! Science: We finished our Spring tree as we added more colorful leaves and flowers to our trees. We are wrapping up our science unit for this term! Social Studies: Continuing with the last week's lesson about feelings, we made our class feeling book! We also learned our new word responsibility! They visited middle / high school library and met our high school librarian, Ms. Menzel. We had a great chance to hear about her responsibility in the library! Week SevenELA: They read two books this week. The first one is Rainbow Fish. This book talks about sharing and how to make friends. They really enjoyed making connection with this book. The second one is The Kissing Hand. This book is about a raccoon who is nervous about going to school. It also talks about different feelings that the characters possess which is also tied to our Social Studies unit. Math: They used their counting skills to create a rainbow fish using the macaroni pasta. They first planned how many pasta they will use for each color and they could dye the pasta with food coloring. Science: This week's theme was Spring. They used a paper bag to make a tree's body and added colorful cotton leaves for Spring trees. We also learned some of spring words, blossoms and sprouts. Social Studies:We talked about how everyone can express different feelings at school. The students have made our class feeling book. Hopefully, this book will help them express their feelings with words. Week Six ELA: This week, we read different book series by Mo Willems. They learned that Mo is not only an author but also an illustrator. On Friday, they chose their favorite book from Mo Willems. They also shared the reason why they chose that book. Math: Using Pigeon character from Mo Willems, they practiced counting macaroni pasta. They also get to compared who got more pasta. Science: This week's theme was Winter. They gathered sticks around the school to make trees in Winter. Social Studies: We talked about how we have to respect people's personal space in our community. We also learned that we can use our words when people are in your personal space. Week FiveELA: We read a book called Caps for Sale by Esphyr Slobodkina and talked about the difference between an author and an illustrator. After reading this book, we made our own peddler with caps. They also got to apply sorting concept from math to the peddler's caps. Math: We had so much fun making pattern bracelets with beads. Science: This week's theme was Fall. They also made trees in Fall using a variety of materials. Social Studies: We filled our happy buckets with the word, respect. Students have been introduced to the word, respect. Week FourELA: We practiced finding rhyming words and tried our best to say the words out loud slowly. In addition to rhyming words, we read a book called "Little Clouds" by Eric Carle and each student chose his or her favorite cloud from the book. We also shared why that was his or her favorite cloud. Math: We worked on sorting and patterns. We also did a counting steps activity. They counted their steps and recorded their numbers on the board. (What a fun way to practice writing numbers!) Social Studies: We read a book, Have You Filled a Bucket Today, to talk about how we can make a happy community at school. We made a bucket and we can't wait to fill our bucket. Science: We went outside to observe our school's trees and they recorded the colors of our trees. After then, we talked about how trees look in summer and made our own tree. Week ThreeThis week, we started our Fall Season labs. We practiced recognizing numbers quickly with our beanbags and also learned about sorting. Just like a scientist, we predicted, observed and recorded our two experiments (Rain in a Jar and Rain Cloud Jar). The experiment started from asking a question about how does it rain. On Friday, we created our own thermometer and talked about how scientists and people use a thermometer in everyday life. During reading time, students tried a partner reading and learned how to solve a problem when two friends disagree to each other's book choice. We also had an amazing day on our first Uniform Free Friday! Week TwoThis week was great. We had the first library class on Monday and swimming class on Wednesday. We also had a chance to practice classroom rules and learn about our school community members. During math and reading class, we reviewed counting and phonemes by identifying the beginning sound of a word. Students also picked their favorite season as we made a class graph. We will learn more about four seasons in term1. Week OneThe first week of school was busy. We got to meet new friends and teachers, learn about classroom routines and rules, and discover different classes in FP by taking a school tour. On Friday, we had a great time making our hand prints on our 6Cs tree.
